Mount Semeru Eruption 2025: Bromo Tourism Operates Normally

Mount Semeru Eruption: Ranu Kumbolo Trek Closed, Bromo Tourism Operates Normally 🌋
Semeru volcanic eruption – The majestic Mount Semeru, East Java’s tallest peak, has once again commanded attention. On Wednesday, November 19th, at 17:00 Western Indonesian Time (WIB), the volcano’s alert status was decisively elevated to Level 4. Consequently, the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Authority (BB TNBTS) has taken immediate action, officially implementing a temporary closure of all trekking activities to the iconic Ranu Kumbolo lake. This swift decision prioritizes visitor safety above all else. Meanwhile, in a significant relief for travelers, tourism to the world-famous Bromo Tengger Semeru area and the serene Ranu Regulo continues to operate without disruption, offering a safe and breathtaking alternative.
Official Closure of Ranu Kumbolo Trekking Activities 🚫
The decision to close the trail was not made lightly. Authorities acted precisely after receiving the formal warning from Indonesia’s Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG). Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha, Head of BB TNBTS, provided a clear official statement regarding the situation.
“In direct response to the information from the PVMBG stating that Mount Semeru’s activity was declared at Level 4 since 17:00 yesterday, we, the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Authority, are closing the hiking activities to Ranu Kumbolo until conditions are declared safe,” stated Rudijanta.
This procedural closure is a standard and critical safety protocol. Therefore, all prospective trekkers must understand that access is strictly prohibited until a comprehensive reassessment confirms the volcanic activity has subsided to a safer level.
Successful Evacuation: Ensuring Safety for All Stranded Trekkers ✅
Fortunately, despite the sudden escalation, a major safety operation was successfully executed. Prior to the official closure, records confirmed that 129 trekkers were already at the Ranu Kumbolo campsite. When combined with their guides, porters, and park officials, the total number of individuals in the area reached 187. Crucially, all of them have been confirmed safe.
According to Rudijanta, the direction of the eruptive material flow played a key role in their safety. “The avalanche of eruptive material is heading south and southeast, while Ranu Kumbolo is on the northern side, so it is not directly impacted,” he explained.
However, the evacuation faced an immediate challenge: deteriorating weather and visibility. Rudijanta elaborated on the difficult decision to delay the descent. “Considering yesterday afternoon’s rainy weather and the almost dark conditions, it was decided that the trekkers would only descend today, accompanied by officers and guides from PPKST who will escort and ensure all trekkers return to Ranupane by this afternoon,” he clarified. This careful planning ensured a secure and orderly evacuation for everyone involved.
Rescheduling for Affected Trekkers 📅
For visitors who have already purchased hiking tickets to Ranu Kumbolo, the TNBTS has guaranteed a rescheduling option. Accordingly, the specific mechanism for this process will be announced at a later date. Therefore, all affected tourists are advised to await further official instructions.
Exploring Alternatives: Bromo and Ranu Regulo Remain Open 🏞️
For travelers wondering about their East Java itinerary, there is excellent news. The temporary situation at Semeru does not affect other major attractions within the vast national park. Specifically, all tourism activities towards the magnificent Mount Bromo caldera and the beautiful Ranu Regulo lake are running normally.
“Meanwhile, tourist visits to the Bromo and Ranu Regulo areas remain open as usual,” Rudijanta confirmed. This means that the iconic sunrise viewpoints, the vast Sand Sea, and the serene beauty of Ranu Regulo are fully accessible. Visitors can continue to enjoy these unforgettable experiences while strictly adhering to all posted safety rules and heeding guidance from local officials.
Heeding Official Warnings for Public Safety 🔊
Finally, authorities have reiterated a crucial reminder for the public to strictly obey the official danger zones established by the PVMBG. This compliance is absolutely essential for personal safety and facilitates effective disaster management efforts.
